Stuff You (Probably) Didn't Know About... Eva Green

Sunday 24 August 2014

Eva Green's one of my favourite actress's working today, because you can never take your eyes off her when she's around, she always gives the material 100% (no matter the objective quality), and tends to elevate weak projects through sheer force of will (Dark Shadows, 300: Rise of an Empire, The Golden Compass, Camelot). A fascinating presence at the cinema or on television, she's equally fascinating off-screen it would appear...

  • Eva Gaëlle Green was born in Paris, France, two minutes earlier than her twin sister Joy.
  • Through her Swedish-French dentist father, she's the great-granddaughter of French composer Paul Le Flem.
  • She made her film debut in Bernardo Betolucci's controversial 2003 movie The Dreamers, alongside Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire). The film features explicit sex scenes and full frontal nudity, which Green later admitted "quite shocked" her and left her "speechless".
  • Green has an interest in Egyptology, which began after visiting the Louvre at the age of seven. Coincidentally, there's a strong Egyptian theme in Penny Dreadful, the Showtime horror drama she's now a leading part of.
  • Casino Royale marked her big breakthrough in 2006, playing Ian Fleming's first Bond Girl in the original novels, Vesper Lynd. She was the fifth French actress to play a Bond Girl. Entertainment Weekly later voted Vesper the fourth best Bond Girl of all time, while Empire magazine listed her as the ninth sexiest female character in cinema history.
  • She was originally set to play the female lead in Lars von Trier's controversial Antichrist, but her agents refused to allow her, so the role went to Charlotte Gainsborough instead.
  • Diane Kruger has replaced Green in three movie roles: Anna in 2009's Mr Nobody, The Seeker in 2013's The Host, and Marie Antoinette in 2012's Farewell, My Queen.
  • Joaquin Phoenix and Edward Norton are amongst her favourite actors, but her favourite actress is Isbaelle Adjani (The Story of Adele H, Nosferatu the Vampyre).
  • She has a border terrier called Griffin, and considers herself both "nerdy" and a "homebody".
  • Green collects religious icons.
  • She appeared on the front cover of a magazine with her actress and children's author mother, Marlène Jobert, when she was just two-months old.
Eva Green appears in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, on UK general release 29 August.
